Margaret Beaufort, Lady
(1443–1509)
   Educational Patron.
   Margaret was the daughter of the Duke of Somerset and the wife first of the Earl of Richmond, then of Lord Henry Stafford and finally of the Earl of Derby. By her first husband she was the mother of the first Tudor king, Henry VII. Under the spiritual guidance of John fisher, she led a life of piety and charity. Today she is remembered for her many educational foundations. These include the Lady Margaret Chairs of Divinity at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge; Christ’s College, Cambridge; and St John’s College, Cambridge.
